We are very pleased about the media release of the Executive Council of Dec 12, 2022, that the IGB will be granted 50’000 CHF to catalogue the legacy stock of books in the municipal library:

Furthermore, the Executive Council has approved a contribution of 50’000 CHF to index the Jewish library from January 2023 to December 2025. In cooperation with the University Library of Basel, the Jewish Community of Basel will catalog its historical holdings according to the scientific standards of the UB, digitize a part of it and thus make the extraordinary collection accessible to the public. The library data is searchable via European and worldwide metacatalogs. The physical copies can be ordered and consulted in the special reading room, following the lending regulations of the UB. The collection is of particular value as it reflects the history of the community and the Basel region: For example, it is one of the few Jewish libraries in Europe that survived World War II and the associated systematic destruction of Jewish books and libraries. To date, the IGB has been able to raise a total of more than 300’000 CHF from renowned foundations for the project to catalogue the historical collection. We will be happy to provide details as soon as fundraising is completed.
